Cleaner sentenced to a fine of 2000 dirhams and imprisonment in Dubai for a wireless headset

The Dubai Misdemeanor Court has rendered a verdict against a cleaner, imposing both imprisonment and a fine of 2000 dirhams.

When he discovered a wireless headset that its owner had left behind and was worth about 850 dirhams, it was this discovery that led to his conviction.

Imprisonment and Fine for Seizing Lost Property

Instead of returning it, he chose to appropriate it, thus implicating himself in the offense of seizing lost property. Consequently, he was apprehended, and the case progressed through the Public Prosecution in Dubai, ultimately reaching the Misdemeanor Court, which exercised leniency in its judgment.

Background of the Lawsuit

The defendant, employed as a cleaner at Dubai Airport, was carrying out his routine duties when he came across a wireless headset of the "Apple" brand, with an estimated value of 850 dirhams. Rather than surrendering the found item to the relevant authorities, he opted to retain it for personal use. The defendant openly admitted to this act of possession in the seizure report, throughout the Public Prosecution's investigations, and in his testimony before the court.

Legal Consequences

In response to the cleaner's actions, the Misdemeanor Court issued a verdict that included both imprisonment and a fine of 2,000 dirhams. The charges were specifically related to the offense of seizing lost property. Despite the acknowledgment of guilt, the court exercised clemency in its judgment.

It is essential for individuals to adhere to ethical standards and legal obligations in situations involving found items. As this case demonstrates, failing to do so can have legal repercussions. The legal system in Dubai is committed to upholding justice and ensuring that individuals are held accountable for their actions in accordance with the law.
